Square collection of beautiful photos

I felt like drawing something, so I started to draw a random unicorn. But when it was time to color, I automatically went for the Gaeva colors, heh
Anyway, by then it was no longer a simple quick drawing, so I figured I might as well put in some effort. I did however draw the entire wing on just one layer instead of four, woot! I also learned how to make water! From scratch in Photoshop, 14 hours, 27 layers (including background). Gaeva © Me CommentsThanks! ^_^ It seems that in order to work with contrasts I need the moonlight somewhere in a pic...

I like the darker tone, it's different from your usual friendly colouration. I also agree with others that the reflection came out well indeed; one can really see that it's water. As for critique, I have two things; first thing is perspective; I feel the back legs are simply not placed right; either they are too close together (which looks like it would tip poor Gaeva over on her side), or the back legs should simple end a fair bit further down. I know there is some forshortening, but ... well something doesn't look right there. Second is the light. Whereas the shadowing is generally very good, I'm wondering where all that light on her back legs, tail and front legs come from? I can possibly buy that there is a high bright moon outside the frame of the picture, which accounts for the manes and maybe the front legs, but the back legs are lit almost parallel to the ground, suggesting Blackback stands out-of-frame lighting her dramatically with a flashlight. Critique apart, I like this, the hairy chest looks good I think, gives her a more "wild" feel. Something to keep for future images of her, definately. . Griatch The shadows are taking over the light!! Heh, I wanted to do something with real contrasts, so nighttime again seemed like a good option.
I know about the backlegs, or at least, I had a lot of trouble positioning them. I thought I had them more or less in the right spot now, but I agree that something feels off there still. As for the light, the moon was supposed to be in the background sky, but then before coloring I changed it's position to be more towards us, to the right (her left), and out of our view. Not above her, but close. Some of that light would come from the moon then I would think, and I figured from the water reflecting it as well? Thanks for the comment, Griatch! ^_^ -- Unicorn's Visions: [link] |
