Artist's Comments

I'll bet when you read the title you thought this was something funny to tease Barbie again, didn't you?? Nope! :XD:

Ha! I've been working on this for weeks, the first sketch has been on my comp for over a month now, and I definitely hate the very sight of it by now. I actually just quite innocently wished to practice coloring metal, that's it. Using everybody's favorite Tyrai just seemed like a good way to go about it. I never meant for it to become this complicated and my personal torture.

And the horrible part? After spending hours on the lineart and changing it over and over (why did I choose that angle...why?!), I couldn't master the technique I meant to use for coloring metal...so in the end I just fooled around and the metal bit barely got any attention comared to the rest of the image -.-

Anyway, it's Barbannis and the Red Knight. They're actually sort of the same person, so this scene takes place in Barbannis' mind while he's fighting back the Red Knight from taking over. Yay. Drama.

I tried to follow Barbannis' (And thus the Red Knight as well) design from the last pic Barbie made as closely as possible, but had to change some things because they just didn't really work in this pose/angle. To come up with ways around this I went back to older versions of Barbannis, and looked at other designs done by other people, like Griatch and Lupin Loki. That helped putting this final image together too!

Very nice to see humanoid images from you, and with such an interesting angle too! ;) It might have been a lot of headaches, but it came out good I think.

The armour of the red knight came out very well, I also like the shadowy structure around him, Barbannis armour is well drawn, but I must admit I agree with you, for an experiment in metal-texture it's not very convincing. I think the main reason for this is the even lighting.

As usual I'm picking on shadows ... the red knight is well handled in this regard, but Barbannis has no self-shadowing at all. He is lit from the inside, and that means there will be some mean self-shadows on his armour from the places where he emits light. His crotch and thighs would not show, for example, or at least they would be heavily structured because of light hitting the surface from the side. That's a rather tricky thing to get right though, you sure picked a difficult pose for this one!

Bar the light-issue, I think you could have made things easy for you when making the metal armour -- by making similar structures in Barbie's armour as the ones you did in the Red Knight's armour -- the reason Barbie looks a bit plain is because his panzer has no structure, only gradients. It's a small addition I think would improve the image a lot.

I think it's a great picture though and I foresee Barbie literally loving it! :D
It's great to see you experimenting with more and more difficult things, so that there remain things to comment on. ;)

Well, that's my secret goal, to keep you entertained by having to come up with new comments for me ;) Improving my skills is just a bonus :D

I agree on the pose ("interesting" angle my ass. Angle from hell!), it was like a chant in my head the whole time I worked on it..."Why did I do that??!"

I knew you were going to bring up the light, I'd have to be blind not to have seen it with the brightness that lurks inside that armor, lol ^_^ I just...couldn't make myself light up his armor in all the right places. When you start to consider punching the screen, it sort of becomes time to let it go ;) I meant to excuse it as "it takes place in his head, different laws of physics apply there". Yup >.> If I get over my "dislike" for looking at this thing, then I mean to see if I can continue working on it and get the lighting right *shudder*.

the reason Barbie looks a bit plain is because his panzer has no structure, only gradients

You lost me there, I'm afraid. Structure and gradients? What? Where? O.o (What did I do?? :XD: )

Glad you like it, Barbie, that makes all the torture worth it! :D I actually meant to put some more in the comment below it, but kinda got lost in my little rant there >.> Anyway, I tried to follow Barbannis' design from the last pic you made as closely as possible, but had to change some things because they just didn't really work in this pose/angle. I also meant to add his sword, but when I looked at the handle, I decided to have mercy on myself and left it out after all :p

And yes, I did have fun putting this drama together actually, lol! Mostly in putting the Red Knight all looming behind him with that hand showing up out of the...whatever that stuff is :p And I was dreading those symbols, but it turned out that that was the funnest part about coloring the Red Knight :D

Anyway, glad you like it, Barbie!
